Frequently Asked Questions / Tips

1 - How to start Shutter Encoder for the first time?

On Mac:

If the screen "Shutter Encoder cannot be opened because it is from an unidentified developer" appears,

you have to run it by right-clicking then open.

On Windows:

If the screen "Windows protected your PC" appears, click on "More info" then "Run anyway".

Why are you getting this warning?

Operating systems use code signing to verify that the application is not malicious.

To obtain this signature, a considerable annual fee would have to be paid for each system.

Being free software, this is impossible for me.

2 - How do I check the stereo of my file?

Add your file to Shutter Encoder and double-click on it (or right-click -> Display).

Your different audio channels will display in VU meter form.

3 - How to generate a video from an image sequence?

First choose a video codec.

Go to "Image sequence" section, then check the box "Activate the image sequence to:"

and choose your frame rate in images/seconds

4 - How to generate images from a video?

Select the "Image" or "JPEG" function and then select the "Create an image sequence from a video" checkbox.

You will have the choice of the file extension in the section "Choose function".

5 - How do I directly integrate my videos into Avid?

Choose the "DNxHD" codec and then in the "Advanced features" check the box

"Generate OP-Atom format files". Set the destination directly into the Avid structure

"Avid MediaFiles/MXF/1", when the conversion is done open Avid then drag the ".mdb" file into

your bin.

6 - How do I get all my videos in constant framerate?

First choose a video codec.

Then in the "Advanced features" section check the box "Conform by:" and set your frame rate in images/seconds.

7 - How do I get all my videos interlaced?

First choose from the editing codecs DNxHD, Apple ProRes, etc.

Then in the "Advanced features" section check the box "Force interlacing"

Shutter Encoder will then set the file to interlaced, if your video is in 50p it creates a true

interleaving, odd frames via the first image, even frames via the second image then its 50i.

8 - How to remove the suffix created by Shutter Encoder?

Delete the name using the "Rename the file(s)" tool by right-clicking on the selected file(s)

then replace the name. Example: "_DNxHD_36" with "".

Finally, click on rename.

You can also select the "Replace suffix by:" checkbox in Shutter Encoder settings

to not generate a suffix.

9 - How to copy a tree without files?

By right-clicking on the files list (empty or not), then choose "Copy a tree" .

The first window will be the choice of the folder containing the multiple folders and subfolders

to be copied, the second window is for the destination of these folders.

10 - How to create a super-slowmotion?

First choose a video codec.

Then in the "Advanced features" section check the box "Conform by:" with "Ultra-slowmotion" option.

Finally, set the desired frame rate, Shutter Encoder will then create additional frames

by interpolation then slow down the video at the speed of its own cadence.

11 - How to burn-in subtitles to my video?

First choose a video codec.

Check the "Edit media content" checkbox then in the "Add subtitles" section

choose your file in .srt format and then adjust your settings before starting the function.

12 - How to reduce flicking exposure of my video?

First choose from the editing codecs DNxHD, Apple ProRes, etc.

Check the "Edit media content" checkbox then in the "Corrections" section check the box "Exposure smoothing".

You can choose between 0 and 100 and preview the result before/after using the icon on the right.

Do not hesitate to push the correction to 100 to smooth the exposure correctly.

13 - How to reduce the aliasing of my video?

First choose from the video codecs DNxHD, Apple ProRes, etc.

Check the "Edit media content" checkbox then in the "Corrections" section check the box "Details".

You can choose between -1.0 and 1.0 and preview the result before/after using the icon on the right.

If you lower the level to -1.0 you will significantly reduce the aliasing of your video.

14 - How to reduce the noise of my video?

First choose from the editing codecs DNxHD, Apple ProRes, etc.

Check the "Edit media content" checkbox then in the "Corrections" section check the box "Noise suppression".

You can choose from 0 to 10 and preview the result before/after using the icon on the right.

15 - How do I know the total duration of all my videos?

Add your files to Shutter Encoder then select them, right-click

and choose "Total length of files". You can also know the future file size of your videos

by choosing from the codecs "DNxHD", "DNxHR" or "Apple ProRes" then choose "Approximate file size".

16 - How to set up a Watch folder?

Do a right-click on the files list and choose "Watch folder".

follow the informations to set your input and output folders,

then select a function and set up your parameters before starting function.

If a file is being created to the input folder,

Shutter Encoder will wait for it to finish before starting the function.

You can instead select "Automatically wait file to be ready" checkbox in Shutter Encoder settings

and drop files that are being rendered.

17 - How to use "2-pass" and "Max. Quality" checkboxes?

- For the "2-pass" checkbox: useful for medium to low video bitrates, check it in the following cases:

With H.264 if < 20 000 kbits/s for 1920x1080 or < 40 000 kbits/s for 3840x2160

With H.265 if < 10 000 kbits/s for 1920x1080 or < 20 000 kbits/s for 3840x2160

- For the "Max. Quality" checkbox: as its name suggests, it allows to obtain the maximum quality of encoding.

However, this process is considerably longer, but you will get more detail in your image.

With a high bitrate the difference is fine but visible, on low bitrate this can be clearly visible

but not necessarily useful because of additional encoding time (the "2-pass" checkbox is much more

appropriate in this case). On the other hand if you use hardware acceleration check it systematically,

the difference in encoding time is less significant.
